Berini has made highly innovative and pioneering contributions to nanophotonics, particularly to the fields of surface plasmons and metamaterials. His work on surface plasmon waveguides and associated integrated structures helped define the field and set directions for research globally. His work on active surface plasmons established plasmonic amplifiers as an application, and his telecom devices and (bio)chemical sensors were adopted by industry.
