His work, translated into over 15 languages, is well known in many countries in academe and also influences government policy. He is much cited in other fields as well; sociology of technology, social theory and the sociology of religion. He has lectured on every continent, and the research group he directs, The Surveillance Project, is widely regarded as a world leader. Recognized by several prestigious awards, including a Killam Fellowship, his work makes an impact far beyond Canada.
