Arthur Frank pioneered the study of illness experience in bioethics and medical sociology, creating thereby new specialties in each. His three books -- At the Will of the Body; The Wounded Storyteller: Body, Illness, and Ethics; The Renewal of Generosity: Illness, Medicine, and How to Live -- have won important awards, been widely translated, and number among the most anthologized writings in medical sociology and social medicine. His international recognition includes invited lectures, conference addresses, and visiting professorships across the world. He was invited to participate in two working groups at The Hastings Center, America's preeminent bioethics institute.
