Dr. Diane Cox
Affiliation: University of Alberta
Keywords: Human genetics, liver disease, copper transport, serpin protease inhibitors
[contact]
LONG
Her research led to significant advances in our understanding of metal transport. In 1993, she and her group cloned the gene for Wilson disease, a disorder of copper transport causing liver and brain damage. This was the first recognition of a specific membrane transporter involved in excretion of copper from the liver. Mutation detection and development of functional assays resulted in reliable molecular diagnosis. She has made major contributions in inherited liver diseases protease inhibitor imbalance, in mapping the immunoglobulin heavy chain, in lipoprotein disease and in the identification of a gene for schizophrenia. She led international efforts for mapping chromosome 14. She is Founder and Chair of the new Department of Medical Genetics, University of Alberta.

Dr. Pieter Cullis
Affiliation: The University of British Columbia
Keywords: Cancer chemotherapy, drug delivery, biomembranes, liposomes, gene therapy

LONG
Pieter Cullis is a scientist whose research has been focused on understanding the roles of lipids in biological membranes and the development of model membrane systems (liposomes) with applications in cancer chemotherapy. His work has led to the development of two liposomal formulations of drugs that have been approved by regulatory agencies for the treatment of the fungal infections often associated with cancer chemotherapy and for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. In addition, two other liposomal drugs based on his work are in clinical development for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and metastatic melanoma.

Dr. Grant McFadden is one of the most prominent figures in his field of virology, a view shared not only by many colleagues in Canada but by eminent virologists worldwide. His numerous scientific contributions and his many novel insights, shared so generously with colleagues, have had a huge impact on fundamental understanding of the molecular biology of DNA viruses and on virus and host-cell interactions. The four areas of his most significant contributions might be summarized as: (1) The discovery and analysis of multiple classes of virus-encoded virokines and viroceptors, (2) The discovery of inhibitors of apoptosis encoded by poxviruses, (3) The analysis of poxvirus molecular biology, and (4) The discovery of novel anti-immune mechanisms of poxviruses. His work and the numerous accolades it has generated have focused an international spotlight on Canadian biological science and, more generally, on Canadian research accomplishments.

Dr. Ray Rajotte
Affiliation: University of Alberta
Keywords: Diabetes, clinical islet transplantation, islet transplantation, biomedical engineering, cryopreservation

LONG
Ray V. Rajotte is a world leader in islet transplantation. His pioneering work in islet isolation, cryopreservation, and transplantation in various animal models allowed the Islet Transplantation Group, which he started in 1982, to take their basic research to the bedside in 1989 by carrying out Canada's first clinical islet transplant to the standard of care for brittle diabetes in 2000. Using what has become known as the Edmonton Protocol, clinical success was improved from 8% to 100% of the diabetic patients becoming insulin independent following an islet transplant. The Edmonton Protocol has set the standard for islet transplantation, which other centres around the world are now trying to emulate.

Stephen Clarkson

A Fellow of the Royal Society and member of the Order of Canada, Stephen Clarkson teaches political economy at the University of Toronto. His books on the once-supreme Liberal Party of Canada include The Big Red Machine and the biography, Trudeau and Our Times, which won the Governor-General’s award for non-fiction. Having recently completed a trilogy on the political economy of North America, he is now working with colleagues at Berlin’s Free University on how norms and institutions privileging foreign corporations’ investments are entrenched—and resisted—between the regions of Europe, North America, and South America.
Dr. James Curtis
Affiliation: University of Waterloo
Keywords: Canada-US comparative, civil society, social inequality, sociology of knowledge, sociology of health

LONG
James Curtis’ work has been significant to defining an indigenous Canadian sociology while also inspiring future generations of scholars. His research spans an array of topics, including religion, sport, social inequality, gender, aging, voluntary association activity, social values and voting, while at the same time being broadly centered on the study of civil society. Among his many contributions is work over several decades comparing Canadian-American values which has served to challenge the conventional thesis of Canadians being more “elitist” and less “achievement oriented” than Americans. This has been the basis for a central debate within sociology and political science. Professor Curtis is author of numerous texts helping to define sociology to students in Canadian terms.

Gwendolyn Davies’ specialization in the literary history of Maritime Canada integrates literary, historical, archival and bibliographical studies to shed new light on the rich cultural life created by the thousands of Planters, Loyalists and Scots whose arrival in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries gave rise to an enduring cultural lineage. Her major focal points include the importance of letters in a manuscript culture, the prevalence of social satirists, and the activities of women writers, presented in detailed studies of such authors as Alice Jones and Marshall Saunders, as well as the first scholarly edition of Thomas McCulloch’s influential The Mephibosheth Stepsure Letters.
