Long Citation
Andrew Rippin is one of the pre-eminent authorities in the field of Islamic studies. His pioneering research focuses on interpretations of the Qur'an written in Arabic from the 9th century to the 12th century, a genre known as tafsir. Dr. Rippin systematically uncovered and investigated much of the early commentary (tafsir) on the Qur'an. With his deep knowledge of how identities create community through interpretation, together with his critical approach towards claims of literary sources to their own antiquity, Rippin is a central figure in the debates about the Qur'an and the contexts in which it must be understood.

Robertson, Harold Arthur - Medical Sciences - Dalhousie University
Harold Robertson has made pioneering discoveries in insect and mammalian neurobiology. One pivotal breakthrough was the discovery that neural stimulation leads to rapid gene expression in mammalian brain, which has been applied to studies of epilepsy, circadian rhythms and psychiatric disorders. Of critical importance to modern addictions research, he and Graybiel discovered that cocaine activates gene expression. His interest in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease using L-Dopa and neural transplantation led him to co-found the Halifax Brain Repair Centre, where his ideas are being applied to treatment of people with Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. R. Robertson
Affiliation: University of Calgary

Dr. Robertson's field of activity in chemistry is the study of the mechanism of organic reactions. He has investigated the kinetics of aldehyde-amine reactions and also the derived parameters from solvolysis. The second of these investigations is the one that he has pushed most actively, and his most important contribution has been the demonstration of the regularity between structure and derived parameters for solvolysis in water. This has been a direct outcome of a series of determinations of accurate rates of reaction over a wide range of temperatures. This is the type of work that contributes to the advancement of theoretical organic chemistry.
