NORTON, Bonny – Department of Language and Literacy Education, The University of British Columbia
Bonny Norton’s innovative and pioneering ideas about identity and language learning continue to have a profound impact on the field of language education worldwide. Her groundbreaking and highly cited research makes visible the social mechanisms of power in language learning and teaching. Her research has found that language learners can help overcome constraints on language learning by claiming more powerful identities from which to speak, read, and write the target language.

O'Byrne, Paul M. - Medical Sciences - McMaster University
Paul O’Byrne is internationally recognized for seminal contributions to understanding the causes and treatment of asthma. Dr. O’Byrne’s initial studies challenged the previous concepts by demonstrating that asthma was inflammatory driven, and prostaglandin and leukotriene mediated. Building on these studies, Dr. O’Byrne developed novel treatments for asthma. Also, his work has explained the mechanisms of allergen-induced inflammatory responses. His studies of asthma treatment have influenced treatment guidelines worldwide. Seldom does one individual change the concepts about an illness and develop treatments that improve the lives of patients around the world. Dr. O’Byrne is such an individual.
