Timothy Brook is the outstanding historian of early modern China in the English-speaking world. His books on this subject have won numerous prizes and been translated into many languages. International historians like Jonathan Spence and Lisa Jardine have praised what Spence calls his “joyful and comprehensive scholarship.” A globally renowned Canadian Sinologist, Brook has also written important books about the politics of twentieth-century China.
