Ivar Ekeland is an outstanding mathematical scientist, an internationally renowned mathematical economist, a dedicated educator, and a prolific writer and disseminator of sciences. His contributions to Mathematics include fundamental results in Convex and Non-linear Analysis, Control Theory, Hamiltonian Mechanics, Symplectic Geometry, Mathematical Economics and Finance. Ekeland has also written several books that are reflections on, or popularization of, mathematics and science, which have been translated into many languages. Their topics range from the role of the least action principle in the development of science, to stable versus chaotic behavior of the solar system, and also to the concept of infinity for young children.
