His originality, intelligence and wide-ranging scholarship are recognized by his colleagues as being nothing less than extraordinary. Best known for his outstanding work in military technology and science, Professor Yates has also produced groundbreaking studies on the history of law and women in China. He has translated and analyzed philosophical and poetry texts of early China, making a major contribution to re-contextualizing ancient Chinese thought. At McGill University, he established the MA and PhD program in East Asian Studies, creating what has become a vital centre for teaching and research.
