Roland Vinette, né à Montréal en 1913, a gravi rapidement, grâce à des aptitudes remarquables, à un talent non moins remarquable, à son jugement sûr et à des études générales et spécialisées toujours couronnées du plus grand succès, les échelons qui I'ont conduit près du sommet, qu'on lui souhaite d'atteindre, des responsabilités que peut assumer un éducateur. Bachelier ès arts, licencié et docteur en pédagogie, il n'enseigna que trois ans dans les écoles publiques de Montréal. On lui confia alors la chaire de pédagogie et de psychologie à I'Ecole normale Jacques Cartier puis à I'Université de Montréal. L'Université Laval et I'Université Saint-Joseph eurent aussi recours à ses précieux services. Il s'imposa par sa valeur et aussi par les qualités d'administrateur qu'on discerna en lui. Il fut I'artisan modeste et efficace des nombreuses et utiles réformes qui se sont accomplies dans les Ecoles normales du Québec depuis 1952 alors qu'on lui en confia la direction générale. Maintenant secrétaire-adjoint du Département de I'instruction publique et secrétaire du Comité catholique du Conseil de I'instruction publique de la province de Québec, il est président de I'Association canadienne des éducateurs de langue française. On lui doit un grand nombre d'articles dans les revues pédagogiques ainsi que quatre ouvrages qui font autorité : « Pédagogie générale », « Méthodologie spéciale», « Echelle de vocabulaire et d'orthographie » ainsi qu'un « Test d'orientation scolaire ». Il fut conseiller spécial du ministre de l'éducation de 1964 à 1969 et professeur agrégé à la Faculté des sciences de l'éducation de l'Université Laval de 1969 à 1978.

Dimitri Weiss, qui a été un des premiers docteurs en économie et administration des entreprises (1969) et le premier docteur d'État ès sciences de gestion en France (1975), est professeur à l'Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et directeur du département Gestion des ressources humaines et des relations d'emploi à l'Institut d'Administration des Entreprises, où il travaille depuis 1962. Il est l'auteur de quelque 160 publications dans les domaines -dans lesquels il a joué un rôle de pionnier- des relations industrielles, de la gestion des ressources humaines, du management, de la communication et du consommérisme, parus en sept langues et douze pays, dont le Canada. Il a fait connaître les auteurs et les travaux canadiens, particulièrement le « Dictionnaire canadien » de Gérard Dion, sur les innombrables tribunes internationales où il a dispensé son savoir. L'intérêt du professeur Weiss pour le Canada, le nombre et la qualité de ses travaux et de ses publications, ainsi que son extraordinaire rayonnement à travers le monde ne sauraient être mieux reconnus qu'en l'accueillant comme membre étranger dans l'Académie des lettres et des sciences humaines de la Société royale du Canada.

Jean Grondin is a philosopher of exceptional merit. His research covers both the fields of modern and contemporary German philosophy and philosophical hermeneutics. From Kant to Heidegger and Gadamer, his analyses were instrumental in the reinstatement of original methodological and thematic continuities, and his numerous works in French, German and English have helped reshape our contemporary interpretations of the connection between hermeneutics and classical critiques of metaphysics. In 1999, he published Hans-Georg Gadamer’s first biography. This multi-talented researcher has achieved international recognition. In Germany, in fact, he is considered one of the leading interpreters of hermeneutics in the tradition of Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer.

Jean Grondin est un philosophe d'exceptionnel mérite. Ses travaux de recherche couvrent à la fois les domaines de la philosophie allemande moderne et contemporaine et de l'herméneutique philosophique. De Kant à Heidegger et Gadamer, ses analyses ont permis de restituer des continuités méthodologiques et thématiques originales, et ses nombreux ouvrages tant en français qu'en allemand et en anglais, ont contribué à réorienter les interprétations contemporaines sur les liens à établir entre l'herméneutique et les critiques classiques de la métaphysique. Il a fait paraître, en 1999, la première biographie de Hans-Georg Gadamer. Ce chercheur aux talents multiples jouit d'une reconnaissance internationale. Il est même considéré en Allemagne comme l'un des principaux interprètes de l'herméneutique selon la tradition issue de Martin Heidegger et Hans-Georg Gadamer.

Michel Laroche est reconnu à l'échelle internationale pour ses travaux originaux et créatifs sur le traitement de l'information, les modèles de prise de décision, la communication persuasive, le rôle de la culture dans la consommation, la publicité internationale, la psychométrie et les techniques de recherche en sciences humaines. Il a participé au développement de plusieurs modèles qui portent son nom et qui sont bien connus. Ses travaux, dont plusieurs sont des classiques, couvrent plusieurs champs disciplinaires dont la psychologie sociale, la psychologie économique, l'anthropologie culturelle, la psychologie de consommation, la publicité, les méthodes statistiques et le management du marketing.

It has been said of Irving Abella that he has carried out three careers at the same time, and has been an outstanding success in each; as a university professor, as a specialist of Canadian history and as a participant in the transformation of Canada. While his publications on certain aspects of Jewish history in Canada have now become reference material, his work on labour has also shaped our understanding of Canada. He is now one of the major historians of Jewish life in Canada.

Dr. David Aberle is one of the most respected anthropologists in North America for his scholarly creativity, diligence and rigour. At present Professor Emeritus in The University of British Columbia, where he has taught since 1967, Aberle received his doctorate from Columbia under the direction of the late Ruth Benedict. Among his first publications were classical contributions to Mongol studies, carried out through documentary research. He has since published some 65 studies, frequently cited, mostly on Navaho and Athapaskan field enquiries, which are fondamental points of reference for theoretical considerations of wider matters, such as kinship, lexical reconstruction, and millenarian movements, and his research continues.

An indefatigable scholar, as his work attests. His book "Jacobean Pageant or the Court of King James I" is a beautifully integrated structure in which the results of research are combined into a kind of monument. His "Shakespeare and the Earl of Southampton" is a brilliant analysis of a relation that had long been obscure. He is now launched upon the sea of James I's papers, which extends to about a quarter of a million words. His nearly unrivalled knowledge of Jacobean sources makes him an ideal man for the task.

Dr. Michael Ames is a foremost example of the creative scholar who seriously and methodically exerts an influence on the professional standards of conduct within his discipline. His research has enlightened anthropology through the analysis of Buddhism in practice, and of the social and cultural influences which shape the destiny of peoples embarking upon industrial innovation and migration to new lands. His commitment and selflessness have enabled him to exercise a respected influence as the profession has developed in Canada, to forge links of cooperation between India and Canada, and for 23 years to guide the destinies of a university Museum designed to serve scholars and public through imaginative innovation.

He has excelled in both teaching and scholarly writing, some of it in interdisciplinary collaboration. He has contributed significantly to the legal and social aspects of labour-management relations by his writings, which he has enriched by wide experience as an arbitrator. This has led him into the broader area of administrative law in general, to which he has brought new historical insights which will be helpful to the courts in establishing standards for review of administrative decisions. His study of and writings on the legal profession have broken new ground in the examination of a self-governing profession.

Margaret Atwood is a truly outstanding poet, novelist and literary critic. She is the author of many powerful and original works, including collections of poems such as "Power Politics" and "You Are Happy"; collections of short stories including "Dancing Girls" and "Bluebeard's Egg"; and novels such as "Surfacing", "Life Before Man", and most recently the dystopian "The Handmaid's Tale". Her reputation has now spread throughout the English-speaking world. On the one hand, her incisive, witty style and her ability to tell a good story have reached a wide audience; on the other hand, her black humour and penetrating insights have already been the subject of many scholarly analyses, both in North America and in Europe.
