Jacques Allard est l'un des plus distingués chercheurs en littérature québécoise. À la retraite depuis 1999, après trente ans d'enseignement à l'Université du Québec à Montréal, il est directeur littéraire de la maison d'édition montréalaise, HMB Hurtubise. Parmi ses distinctions, notons qu'il est membre –et vice-président– de l'Académie des lettres du Québec, et membre du Conseil de la revue Voix et images, littérature québécoise, dont il est cofondateur. Il est récipiendaire du prix Raymond Klibansky (1995) de la Fédération canadienne des sciences humaines et sociales pour l'édition critique du roman remarquable d'Hubert Aquin, Prochain épisode. Il a été finaliste au prix du Gouverneur général du Canada (2001) et au prix de la critique Jean-Ethier-Blais pour son essai de prime importance, Le Roman du Québec, histoire, perspectives, lectures, dont un second tome paraîtra sous peu. Président-fondateur du Comité de recherche de l'Association internationale de sociologie sur les mouvements sociaux, il a montré que leurs conduites conflictuelles et protestataires façonnent les sociétés modernes avancées et recomposent notamment leur scène politique, soit les rapports tant à l'État qu'aux partis politiques.
