Jacques Allard est l'un des plus distingués chercheurs en littérature québécoise. Il est récipiendaire du prix Raymond Klibansky (1995) de la Fédération canadienne des sciences humaines et sociales pour l'édition critique du roman remarquable d'Hubert Aquin, Prochain épisode. Il a été finaliste au prix du Gouverneur général du Canada (2001) et au prix de la critique Jean-Ethier-Blais pour son essai de prime importance, Le Roman du Québec, histoire, perspectives, lectures, dont un second tome paraîtra sous peu. Il travaille actuellement à un essai biographique sur l'œuvre et la vie d'Hubert Aquin, dont il a codirigé (avec Bernard Beugnot, M.S.R.C.) l'édition critique de l'œuvre narrative (douze volumes). M. Allard est l'auteur de quatre livres (trois portant sur la littérature québécoise, et un, Zola, le chiffre du texte (1978), étant une étude de L'Assommoir.)
