LINSKY, Bernard – Department of Philosophy, University of Alberta Bernard Linsky is one of the world’s foremost historians of the foundations of mathematical logic in the early 20th century. His incisive analyses have led to an extensive reconsideration of the received view of the way logic has impacted mathematics and philosophy. His innovative manuscript research has also opened, for the first time, essential works in the history of mathematical logic to direct study by anyone versed in modern logic.

LONG Professor Jacek Lipkowski is nominated for his extensively recognized, ground-breaking research in the area of electrochemical surface science. The foundations of his work go back some 30 years when he developed sensitive methods for the electrochemical-thermodynamic evaluation of the adsorption of small organic molecules at mercury and gold electrodes. Continuation of his work, in the recent years, has put his research at the cutting-edge of modern surface chemistry, for example in his studies at well-ordered single-crystal surfaces of metals where sensitive measurements of effects of electrode potential on adsorption have added a new dimension to the field of surface science. This work has been recognized by scientists, world-wide, a situation that has led him to be selected a few years ago as the editor of the prestigious publication, Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry and Interfacial Chemistry, previously edited for 35 years by Professor Roger Parsons, FRS. In recent years he has turned part of his research activities towards biophysical-chemistry and has published exceptionally original papers on the structure and properties of bio-membranes by means of an outstandingly original procedure of neutron reflection from thin membrane films and infrared radiation reflection absorption spectroscopy. Various areas of his research have been recognized by internationally significant awards. SHORT Jacek Lipkowski has done ground-breaking research in the area of electrochemical surface chemistry. Dr. A.E. Litherland has achieved an international reputation as a brilliant nuclear physicist. Since he came to Chalk River from the University of Liverpool in 1953 he has pursued an energetic program of research in low-energy nuclear physics. This has been aimed particularly at elucidating problems of nuclear structure, especially those of collective motion in light nuclei. Possessed of a notable scientific insight he has been quick to recognize those features of nuclear behaviour that distinguish between different theoretical explanations, and to originate and develop experimental techniques for observing them. With his energy and enthusiasm, and his willingness to communicate new ideas, he makes an ideal leader of younger scientists, and is stimulating to all those in contact with him.

Yang Liu is the Canada Research Chair in Future Water Services and an NSERC Industrial Research Chair in Sustainable Urban Water Development at the University of Alberta. She develops innovative and economical, health-protective and environmentally friendly technologies used by the wastewater industry, as well as local and municipal governments, to provide Canadians with clean drinking water and wastewater services. Her research thus fosters the development of healthy communities.

Professor Guojun Liu, Canada Research Chair in Materials Science at Queen’s University, is a pioneer and world leader in the field of materials science. In particular, he has led the development of nano- and micro-structured materials constructed from block and graft copolymers; their self-assembly or directed-assembly; and the ability to control and manipulate their shape, size, function roles and stability, to make important fundamental and applied scientific contributions.

Teresa Liu-Ambrose, UBC Professor of Physical Therapy and Canada Research Chair, is an international leader in Healthy Aging Research. Using rigorous clinical trial methodology, she has pioneered insights into various types of exercise programmes in preventing cognitive decline and falls in older adults. Her work has led to surprising and highly influential insights in an area of profound societal need. She has assumed leadership roles in major Canadian and international forums and projects, and translated her findings to directly benefit patients.

Teresa Liu-Ambrose, professeure de physiothérapie à The University of British Columbia et titulaire d’une Chaire de recherche du Canada, est une chef de file internationale dans le domaine de la recherche sur le vieillissement en santé. For many years Professor Llewellyn has made outstanding and internationally acclaimed contributions to our quantitative understanding of the complex atomic and molecular energy transfer processes which take place in the airglow and the aurora in the high atmosphere and in the glows associated with spacecraft motion in the atmosphere. He has performed ingenious ground-based rocket and spacecraft observations with great engineering skill and has interpreted them with great physical insight. He is a recognized international leader in these fields.

Llewellyn, Kristina R. – Professor, Department of Social Development Studies, Renison University College, University of Waterloo and Department of History, University of Waterloo Dr. Kristina R. Llewellyn is one of Canada’s leading scholars in history and education whose research tackles vital questions in teaching, oral history, and justice. Author and co-editor of four books, including Democracy’s Angels: The Work of Women Teachers and the award-winning Oral History, Education, and Justice, she is a publicly engaged commentator on education issues, promoting nuanced understandings and practices of history, teaching, and learning for an equitable society.

He is an international authority on goodness of fit, model assessment and model selection, and has provided clear statistical insights into signal and particle detection problems in the physical sciences.
