Bryan Kolb has achieved distinction by publishing both learned works and original research in the field of neuropsychology. Among his scientific findings are that considerable recovery of function is possible following brain damage at certain ages, that recovery involves anatomical sprouting allowing for new connections by surviving neurons, and that under some circumstances new cells are born that replace those damaged by injury to the post-natal mammalian forebrain. His studies have involved both laboratory animals and human patients. KONHAUSER, Kurt - Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, University of Alberta Kurt Konhauser is a world expert in the field of Geobiology. His research ranges from the role of microbes in metal binding and forming minerals to describing the biogeochemical processes controlling elemental cycling in oceans through time. His work is significant in the understanding the evolution of oxygenation on the early Earth. He has published the authoritative textbook on the subject and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Geobiology.

His career has spanned diverse topics, including the genes of the human immune system and genome duplication in salmonids. Using novel bioinformatics technologies, he succeeded in identifying a new pattern of DNA sequence conservation which suggested very different mutation rates over different genomic regions and led to the proposal of a "Mosaic Model of Genomic Evolution." A project leader of the multinational consortium for Genomic Research in All Salmon (cGRASP), he has developed genomic resources to answer questions of great economic and social importance to aquaculture, conservation, and the environment.

Marek Korkusinski, a theorist working at the National Research Council of Canada, is an expert in nanotechnology. He is the leading theorist for the quantum electronics and nano-photonics projects at the NRC. He specializes in materials science and the quantum theory of nanosystems, and collaborates with leading international experimental groups. The computational tools that he developed found applications in diverse fields - from photovoltaics for solar cells to the use of single electron spins for quantum information.

Ute Kothe is an Alberta Innovates Technology Futures Strategic Research Chair in Transcriptomics of RNA Modification and co-founder of the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI). Using interdisciplinary approaches from biophysics to genetics, she has made pioneering discoveries regarding the role of RNAs and proteins in gene expression with relevance for several diseases. Her leadership for the international RNA community and in science outreach has gained her numerous awards.

Ute Kothe est titulaire d’une Chaire de recherche stratégique pour Alberta Innovates en transcriptomie de la modification de l’ARN et co-fondatrice de l’Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute (ARRTI). En appliquant les approches interdisciplinaires de la biophysique à la génétique, elle a réalisé des avancées concernant le rôle des ARNs et des protéines dans l’expression des gènes.
