André Joyal
Affiliation: Université du Québec à Montréal
[contact]
André Joyal has made profound contributions to four branches of mathematics using elegant categorical methods. He revolutionalized 'combinatorics' by letting coefficients of power series be finite sets. In 'topology', he replaced spaces by locales, dispensing with Euclid's points, and developed a categorical treatment of "braids", preparing for an attack on "knots" and "strings" in physics. In 'algebra', he significantly improved and generalized Grothendieck's Galois theory. In 'logic', he pioneered categorical models of type theory and is linked with the American philosopher in "Kripke-Joyal semantics" for intuitionistic higher order logic.

Joel Kamnitzer
Affiliation: McGill University
Induction Year: 2023
[contact]
Joel Kamnitzer has explored geometric objects related to Lie groups, inspired by ideas from theoretical physics. Using these geometric objects, Kamnitzer uncovered deeper structures in the representation theory of Lie groups: especially canonical bases and categorification. His knot homology construction inspired mathematicians and physicists, leading to great advances in understanding the link between these fields.
Dr. Niky Kamran
Affiliation: McGill University
Keywords: Dirac operators, exterior differential systems, quasi-exactly solvable potentials, conservation laws, le pseudo-group.
[contact]
Niky Kamran, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, McGill University, is a leading researcher in the geometric study of differential equations. In a series of joint papers with Finster, Smoller and S. T. Yau, he has recently established sharp estimates for the long-time behaviour of Dirac fields in axisymmetric black hole geometries. He is also a founder of the rapidly expanding field of quasi-exactly solvable spectral problems in quantum mechanics. The growth of this field is due to a significant extent to his foundational papers. He is the recipient of the André Aisenstadt Prize in 1992, and is a Laureate of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium. He won that academy's prize in mathematics in 1988 for his research monograph "Contributions to the study of the equivalence problem of Elie Cartan and its applications to partial and ordinary differential equations."
