Brad Inwood is generally recognized in the international classical and philosophical academic communities as one of the two most important scholars writing on ancient Greek philosophy in Canada. When a revised version of his doctoral thesis was published in 1985 as a book with the title "Ethics and Human Action in Early Stoicism", it was at once saluted as one of the best books on Hellenistic philosophy produced in the last generation. His recent translation of and commentary on the poem of Empedocles (Toronto, 1992) is already a standard work equally appreciated by both students and seasoned scholars.

Nafissa Ismail is dedicated to women health research and to the prevention of mental illnesses. She is well-known for illuminating previously unknown biological pathways rendering females more sensitive to stress during adolescence, which would increase their vulnerability to mental illnesses. She has also discovered that specific bacteria in the gut can increase reliance to stress. Her breakthroughs and important achievements have been well-recognized with numerous distinctions and awards.

Victor Ivrii, Department of Mathematics, University of Toronto, is Canada's most distinguished expert on partial differential equations. He proved, by methods of exceptional depth and beauty, the Weyl conjecture on the second term in the asymptotics of the counting function for the eigenvalues of a Laplacian on a manifold with boundary. That conjecture had been open for 70 years and attracted some of the strongest geometric analysts. Dr. Jabado was the first to identify a histone mutation in human disease, thereby generating a paradigm shift in understanding the biology of cancer. Her landmark papers demonstrate a direct effect of epigenetic dysregulation during development in the causal origin of fatal brain tumours in children and young adults. Her novel approach has fundamentally advanced cancer research by focusing on the role of the epigenome in cancer genesis and progression.

Dr. Brian R. James has an outstanding international reputation for his research on homogeneous catalysis, and bioinorganic and medicinal inorganic chemistry. His work, particularly on the use of complexes of rhodium (Rh) and ruthenium (Ru) to catalyse the hydrogenation, oxidation, and carbonylation of hydrocarbons, and decarbonylation of organic compounds, has attracted world-wide attention and has clearly established him as a leading scientist in the field of catalysis. Original work on Ru complexes has shown these to be important metalloenzyme models for some biological catalytic processes. Over his 50 year independent career to 2014, in which some 54 Ph.D. and 26 M.Sc. students have graduated, his group has published about 450 papers, and 8 patents mainly in the pulp and paper area; over 100 postdoctoral workers and visiting faculty have spent time with him at the Univ. of BC. The research has generated 30 National and International awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (1983), the Jacob Biely Award (top UBC research prize) (1986), the CIC Catalysis Award (1990), a Canada Council Killam Fellowship (1993), the RSC Award in Chemistry of the Noble Metals and Their Compounds (1996), the E.W.R. Steacie Award (1997), the CIC Medal (2000), and the Rylander Award (2007).
Noel James

Noel James has made imaginative, comprehensive and voluminous contributions to the fields of carbonate sedimentology, stratigraphy and paleontology. In carbonate sedimentology he has developed comprehensive models for the evolution of reef ecosystems through geological time. He has combined detailed field and lab work in sedimentology, stratigraphy and paleontology to understand the development of passive continental margins (in the Appalachians, Oman, Egypt, Australia) and bordering carbonate platforms. His many reviews of Facies Models have become basic reference works. The quality of his research has been acknowledged by many awards including the NSERS Steacie Fellowship (1984-86).
