Dr. Ian Brent Heath
Affiliation: York University
Keywords: Cell biology, mycology, plant biology
[contact]
lan Brent Heath, one of Canada's most innovative cell biologists, has elucidated the role of the cytoskeleton in the intracellular mechanics of fungal and plant cells. This work is of central importance because almost all aspects of the biology of these organisms is controlled by the cytoskeleton. He pioneered the use of electron microscopy for functional and phylogenetic studies of fungal and protist cell division. Heath is now introducing innovative concepts to the process of tip-growth, the hallmark of the fungi. He has been awarded the Huxley Memorial Medal for Research Excellence by the Imperial College.

MICHELE CHRISTINE HEATH, Professor, Department of Botany, University of Toronto. Dr. Heath's cytological studies on rust fungi have not only contributed significantly to the understanding of how these obligate plant pathogens interact at a cellular level with their hosts and nonhosts, but also have allowed her to develop more widely applicable models of the basis and evolution of host parasite specificity. In addition, she was the first to develop a technique to induce rust haustoria away from the living plant, and to discover, in a rust fungus, a cultivar-specific elicitor of defense responses that may be of major importance in determining host specificity.

Hekimi, Siegfried - Molecular Biology and Genetic - McGill University
Siegfried Hekimi has advanced our understanding of the causes of animal aging, in particular by discovering and studying long-lived mutants and using them to test theories of aging. For example, his work suggests that free radicals might not be the cause of aging, in contrast to what was previously widely believed.

Hekimi, Siegfried - Molecular Biology and Genetics - McGill University
Siegfried Hekimi’s work has advanced our understanding of the mechanisms that dictate animal longevity. He has contributed significantly in pioneering and validating the genetic approach to the study of aging using nematodes and mice. Specifically, his work has demonstrated that: 1) There are evolutionarily conserved genes whose function limits lifespan, 2) Such aging genes can be grouped into independent genetic pathways, 3) There is a positive causal relationship between mitochondrial electron transport and aging. 4) Molecular damage from mitochondrial reactive oxygen species is not the link between mitochondrial function and aging.

John Helliwell is one of Canada's younger economists, whose work is widely recognized internationally both in governments and in academic research. His earlier studies of the effect of governmental monetary and fiscal policies on private and public spending or new capital goods developed into a series of important research endeavors for two royal commissions, the Bank of Canada and various environmental and consumer councils. Not only did he help to construct RDX2, an economic simulation model of the Canadian economy, but later to 'link' it to similar models of economies with which Canada trades. More recently he has turned to the effects on the Canadian economy of proposed public and private stabilization and energy policies. All these activities have led to very numerous contributions to books and journals and to speeches to groups in and out of government and university.

LONG CITATION
Professor John W. Hepburn is an expert on the interaction of laser light with atoms and molecules. He was the first to show that the ZEKE spectroscopic technique could be used to measure high energy ionization thresholds. He showed that the well-known Frank-Condon approximation broke down for some ZEKE experiments, and this breakdown could be exploited to measure the very high energy vibrational levels of diatomic ions. Most recently, Dr. Hepburn has developed a new technique, called threshold ion-pair production spectroscopy, which he has used to measure chemical bond strengths to unprecedented parts per million accuracy.

The distinguished scholarship on the early Middle Ages of Michael W. Herren, Department of Humanities, Atkinson College, York University, involves a lifetime's work on the "insular" authors of Britain and Ireland. His numerous editions, translations, and commentaries are works of astonishing erudition that frolic confidently in the obscurities of multilingual vocabulary and multicultural reference. The Latin language is the great theme that he takes up in a major new journal he recently founded. He explores, through the language, wider aspects of the culture it bears. These include art, religion, and – in his current, pioneering study – the appropriation of classical myth.
