LONG John Dick is a world leader in the study of human hematopoietic stem cells. His development of the first human xenotransplant assay for normal and leukemic stem cells has revolutionized stem cell research. His numerous contributions to human blood stem cell biology include the identification of repopulating stem cells, the discovery of different classes of stem cells, and the development of stem cell gene transfer. His landmark papers on the first identification of leukemic stem cells have profoundly altered understanding of cancer biology. Dickie's interests are primarily in marine ecology and fisheries. In association with a mathematician (J.E. Paloheimo) he has developed production equations for marine food chains, using physiological and behavioural characteristics. In 1968 he was invited to give a special lecture at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea, meeting in Copenhagen (the only invited lecture). In 1970 he was invited lecturer on Food Chains at the Centennial celebrations of the American Fisheries Society. Currently he is co-author (with R.W. Stewart) of the Science Council Report on Marine Science & Technology in Canada.

Mark Diederichs is an expert in engineering geology, rock mechanics and rock engineering. He has been a strong advocate promoting the integration of geological principles, fundamental geomechanics and rock engineering application, thereby elevating the state of art and practice in deep mining, open pit mineral extraction, tunnelling and underground cavern construction for transportation, water transfer, hydroelectric generation, deep mine access, and research enabling safe deep underground storage of nuclear waste.

Erwin Diewert is established as one of the world's top three or four innovators in economic-duality theory. His work, in Chicago, and in Canada since 1970, has dealt with functional structure, index numbers, and other applications of duality. His work, moreover, is always guided by a serious concern for empirical implementation, and for policy issues, particularly concerning labour and employment. He has, for example, made significant contributions to our understanding of the impact of labour unions in the general-equilibrium framework, and, equally, of the measurement of productivity. Known internationally, he has inspired and directed outstanding students already becoming influential in the profession.

Walter Dilger is Professor of Civil Engineering at The University of Calgary. Dr. Dilger's original contributions to research on time-dependent and temperature effects in concrete and composite structures, ductility of reinforced concrete and design of partially prestressed concrete members has led to a better understanding and prediction of structural performance. He is coinventor of the stud shear reinforcement for flat slab, which is used in North America, Europe and Australia. His designs in bridge engineering have won several international awards. He received the 1991 Killam Memorial Prize for research Engineering.

Dr. Dillon is one of the world's most active researchers in the field of aquatic biogeochemistry. His work was instrumental in demonstrating the key role of water renewal in the relationship between inputs of pollutants to lakes and the resulting concentrations. This concept is now incorporated in all major pollutant budgets for lakes. Dillon's studies of the chemistry of lakes in eastern Ontario were instrumental in the establishment of phosphorus control in lake management. He was the first to discover that polluted precipitation was severely acidifying lakes in areas of Ontario remote from local point sources.

Gina Dimitropoulos is an Associate Professor of Social Work and cross appointed to the Departments of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She is a global expert on eating disorders and youth mental health. She has pioneered innovative treatments and novel psychotherapies for youth with eating disorders and mental health issues across community and clinical contexts. Her treatment development and knowledge mobilization approaches ensure youth and families are co-creators in the research process. She fosters national and international partnerships to drive research with a translational impact on policy and practice. She is leading studies on early interventions, transitions in care, brief interventions and family-based treatments for youth and emerging adults with eating disorders.
