Henri Darmon
Affiliation: McGill University
Keywords: Number Theory, elliptic curves, L-functions, modular forms, P-Adic numbers
[contact]
LONG
Henri Darmon is one of the top mathematicians of his generation in the world working on the arithmetic of elliptic curves. He has made striking and highly original contributions to the Iwasawa theory of elliptic curves in relation to the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer. In particular, he has done deep work on the "main conjectures" relating special values of L-functions of elliptic curves to suitable lwasawa modules arising from descent theory, and has proved a "main conjecture" in the anti-cyclotomic case. His work uses deep and sophisticated ideas from p-adic arithmetic geometry. Henri Darmon's outstanding contributions to research have been recognized by numerous prizes and awards, including the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship, the Coxeter-James Prize, the Aisenstadt Prize and the Ribenboim Prize.

Dr. Regna Darnell
Affiliation: Western University
Keywords: First nations, language and culture, eco system health, history of anthropology, theory and criticism

Regna Darnell (Professor of Anthropology at the University of Western Ontario) is eminent in two fields.
As a distinguished historian of North American anthropology and linguistics, she has focussed on the process of institutionalization and written the definitive intellectual biographies of two founding figures. In the field of language-and-culture, her work ranges from the general ethnography of communication among the Plains Cree of Alberta to the discourse strategies employed in English by the Ojibwe and Mohawk communities of southern Ontario, and her ethnographic contributions are as important as her theoretical insights. In seeking to articulate the meaning of cultural forms for participants in the culture, Darnell explicates and, at the same time, continues "the Americanist tradition."

Jagannath Prasad Das, Developmental Disabilities Centre, University of Alberta, is a world class scholar and researcher in several areas of cognitive and educational psychology. His central interest over the years has been the study of intelligence – its nature, development, assessment, and dysfunction – and he has made major contributions to these topics, both in theory and in application. He extended Luria's clinical observations and fashioned them into a theory of intelligence whose central features are attention, planning, simultaneous and successive cognitive processing. Das applied this theory to the study and assessment of cognitive development and mental retardation.
