From his first work at Guelph in 1971, Josef Cihlar recognized the power of modern observational techniques in the urgent task of accurately quantifying changes in the most important components of the Earth System and our life support systems. Cihlar has been a leader in Canadian and international global change programmes in using satellite observations to precisely quantify change in the biosphere and surface systems, soil and water. He has received a host of special awards for his massive contributions and has been a leader in Canada in this vital field of our modern science.

John Joseph Clague, Earth Science Program, Simon Fraser University, is internationally known for his fundamental contributions to Quaternary geology and widely recognized for his assessments of natural hazards. His research on landslides and glacier-dammed lakes have provided lessons in hazard management. His studies of coastal crustal movements and analyses of fiord and lake fills have provided evidence of frequency of major earthquakes. Elizabeth Clare is a global leader in biodiversity science. She popularized the use of DNA in feeding ecology and food web analysis, pioneered the use of DNA filtered from the air for targeted species monitoring and demonstrated how planetary air quality networks can monitor global biodiversity. She is a popular science communicator volunteering for multiple STEM mentoring groups and hosts the BioAudio podcast for university students.

The outstanding achievement of applied mathematician Colin W. Clark has been his creation of the new field of 'mathematical bio-economics'. In this, problems of biology and economics are addressed using the mathematical concepts and methods of optimization and control theory. In studies of various marine animal populations and other renewable resources, Clark has shown that theories of resource exploitation which disregard the time variable, both biologically and economically, have major shortcomings. The appearance of Clark's four eloquently written books in this area, together with his many journal publications, have revolutionized the thinking of the resource manager, and in particular, the economics of fisheries management. It is a rare article in fisheries economics that does not cite his classic book entitled "Mathematical Bio-economics: The Optimal Management of Renewable Resources".

Garry Clarke, a notably sound geophysicist with a deep respect for thermodynamics, has become an international authority on thermal regimes of glaciers, and the effect of temperature on glacier flow, including the phenomenon of glacier surging. He is unquestionably Canada's leading scientist in these fields. Thoroughly adept at mathematical modeling and in the theoretical aspects of glaciology, he is equally at home both in instrumentation and in field work on the ice itself. He is an effective communicator with scientists in neighbouring disciplines, able to grasp their problems and apply his expertise to the solutions.

Dr. Clements' work significantly revises our understanding of literary modernism. Her book "Baudelaire and the English Tradition" documents with precision, thoroughness and brilliance the influence of Baudelaire on English writers. As co-editor of "A Feminist Companion to Literature in English" she has been responsible for approximately 1000 biographical-critical and topic entries presenting new information about women writers of the last century. This impressive scholarly recovery fundamentally alters our understanding of the literature of the period and lays the necessary basis for a significant and wide range of further work.

Dr. Yves Clermont, an outstanding microscopist, has reached international repute on the basis of his work on the testis. At scientific meetings dealing with male reproduction in the United States and Europe, he is usually the one asked to describe the structure of the testis and the dynamics of sperm cell formation. Indeed, as a result of work by his group, the knowledge of the seminiferous epithelium has reached a degree of sophistication which is rarely found in morphological studies. His teaching is equally outstanding. The clarity of his lectures, the artistry of his drawings on the blackboard and his relaxed presentations make him one of the best loved teachers at McGill University.

Ronald Martin Clowes has distinguished himself as a dynamic explorer of the Earth's crust, pioneering the application of sophisticated seismic methods to unravel the complex underground structure of Canada's western continental margin. Through his personal research, and more lately through his direction and scientific leadership of "LITHOPROBE", Canada's largest Earth Science program, Ron Clowes has made lasting contributions to Canadian Earth Sciences.
