Long Citation (for publication and press release) Clifford Burgess is a theoretical physicist who has made an impact over an unusually broad range of fields during his twenty years of research in Canada. His contributions span superstring theory, early universe cosmology, particle phenomenology, astrophysics and condensed matter physics. His innovative constructions of cosmological inflation based on string theory opened new areas of research and brought string theory to a stage where it may be tested by experimental observations. He is a renowned expert in the applications of effective field theory. With over 120 published articles, he is one of Canada's most prolific and highly cited particle theorists. Dr. Burke has created new knowledge on the role of lipid signalling in pathogen infections and in cancers. He develops cutting-edge methods and infrastructure to study lipid signalling proteins and their role in human health and is developing novel therapeutics for cancer, malaria and viral infection. He has established extensive international collaborative networks to advance translational research towards novel therapeutics.

STEPHEN K BURLEY, Professor and Head of Laboratory, The Rockefeller University, is a structural biologist working in the field of eukaryotic gene regulation. Using X-ray crystallography and other methods derived from chemistry and physics, he has established an innovative, internationally-recognized program of research aimed at discovering the precise molecular mechanisms responsible for controlling messenger RNA production in eukaryotes. His remarkable pioneering studies of the structure and function of the TATA box-binding protein, a universal eukaryotic transcription factor required for expression of every gene in every cell, revealed an unprecedented mode of DNA bending/recognition, providing detailed molecular insights into the problem of understanding eukaryotic gene expression.

Dr. Howard Bussey, Professor of Biology, McGill University, is an internationally renowned yeast molecular geneticist. His early studies on the killer toxin produced by certain yeast showed that it, like mammalian neuropeptides, is cut out from a larger precursor protein by a Golgi-located peptidase. Dr. Bussey's discovery that the killer receptor contains a B-glucan component led him to an important series of discoveries on B-glucan synthesis and secretion. Recently, Dr. Bussey has published the complete sequence of chromosome I of yeast. He is a member of an international team of collaborators who are sequencing all 16 chromosomes of yeast. When complete, this will be the first time the entire genome of an eukaryotic organism is known. This knowledge will have profound implications for our understanding of eukaryotic cell function.

One of Canada’s most prolific young policy scholars, Daniel Béland’s work has significantly influenced government, public and scholarly debates around many contemporary issues. His international reputation is evidenced by the many fellowships, visiting professorships, media requests and speaking engagements he has accepted around the world. Béland holds a CRC in Public Policy, and his research has significantly augmented literature surrounding politics, institutions and the effect of ideas on policy change.

BÖK, Christian – Department of English, University of Calgary Christian Bök is an experimental poet in Canada. Recognized internationally as a very influential writer, Bök explores the music of language, often using scientific mechanisms to create poetry. His book Eunoia (2001), the best-selling book of Canadian poetry, has won the Griffin Prize in 2002. His most recent work, The Xenotext (2015), contributes not only to poetic practice, but also to molecular biology and cellular genetics.
