BIRSS, Viola - Department of Chemistry, University of Calgary Viola Birss is an international leader in electrochemical materials science. She has made highly significant contributions to the deposition of useful oxide films on metal surfaces, the synthesis and application of nanoparticles, and in enhancing the performance of fuel cells.

La qualité de son style incisif et vigoureux ne s'est pas seulement fait valoir dans l'analyse des questions d'actualité politique. Elle s'est d'abord signalée, dès 1974, au « Devoir » , comme journaliste spécialisée dans les questions d'éducation, domaine qu'elle n'a jamais négligé par la suite. Ses études avancées ayant porté sur l'organisation des universités, elle a été une interlocutrice privilégiée pour le milieu universitaire dans lequel elle est régulièrement conférencière. Humaniste distinguée, elle a beaucoup oeuvré à la promotion des arts et la qualité de ses interventions dans ce domaine l'a amenée à être invitée à siéger au Conseil du Théâtre du Nouveau Monde, à celui du Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal et à jouer un rôle de premier plan dans le soutien de la création contemporaine en arts visuels. Elle a aussi été directrice de programmes à la Fondation CRB de Montréal et a publié en 1992 un premier roman très bien accueilli. L'ensemble de ses activités lui ont valu l'octroi de quatre doctorats honorifiques au Canada et aux États-Unis.

Alexandre Blais has taken part in the development of circuit quantum electrodynamics, a new field of research that established links between quantum information, solid state physics and quantum optics. For ten years, his theoretical contributions at the forefront of the field have resulted in important conceptual advances and inspired much of dazzling experimental progress in this new field of research, suggesting the possibility of realizing a quantum computer.

Dr. Chris Bleackley is a biochemist and molecular biologist who has been responsible for the discovery and delineation of the major cytotoxic pathway used by T lymphocytes. His work has had international impact and has been crucial in understanding how the immune response controls virus infection, transplantation rejection and cancer. He is both a Howard Hughes International Research Scholar and MRC Distinguished Scholar and his work represents some of the most important achievements in immunology in Canada in the past fifty years.

BLIER, Pierre - Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Ottawa Professor Blier’s sophisticated and translational approaches to neuroscience and pharmacology have contributed to the identification of the neural pathways that are involved in the effects of antidepressants, to the understanding of the neurochemical processes involved in major depressive disorder, and to the improvement of its treatment. He is also a key contributor to the development of standards and policies in the field.

BLOMLEY, Nicholas, Department of Geography, Simon Fraser University Nicholas Blomley has been influential in creating the field of legal geography. For over thirty years, he has persuasively argued for the need to engage with the law-space nexus, particularly when analyzing the meaning and practice of property in land. His work reveals how property is implicated in geographies of power, subordination and resistance.
