She has made major contributions to our understanding of how cells detect and repair DNA damage caused by ionizing radiation. Her work has potential for developing new approaches for cancer therapy. ------------------ Lees-Miller, Susan P. - Medical Sciences - University of Calgary Susan P. Lees-Miller discovered an enzyme, the DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK), which has important roles in the detection and repair of ionizing radiation-induced DNA damage in human cells. Her innovative research has led to a greater understanding of how cancer patients respond to radiation therapy and many forms of chemotherapy. In addition, her investigations have revealed how cells repair DNA damage introduced during the development of T and B cells that regulate immune function, providing a molecular basis for some immunodeficiencies. She is an international leader in the DNA repair field; her work has been cited over 6500 times.
