Mary Lynn Stewart, Professor Emeritus, Departments of History and Women's Studies, Simon Fraser University, is one of the foremost historians of the Western European welfare state whose work analyzes the lives of working- class men and women in nineteenth and twentieth century France. Her early work significantly increased understanding of political and social activism in the French provinces before and during the Second Republic. Her subsequent work focused on protective legislation. Her pioneering challenge of the prevailing view that these laws protected women and led to universal legislation has contributed to the integration of gender issues and women's work with more traditional concerns of economics and politics in the study of welfare legislation. Her two most recent books examined the bio-politics and education of French girls and women about their bodies in the Third Republic and the marketing of haute couture to French women in the Interwar years. She is currently preparing a book tentatively entitled Gender, Generation and Journalism in Interwar
France.

Maria Strack, Canada Research Chair in Ecosystems and Climate, leads an internationally recognized research program investigating greenhouse gas exchange in peatland ecosystems - the world’s largest natural terrestrial carbon stores. Donna Strickland is a recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for co-inventing chirped pulse amplification (CPA), the method for creating high-intensity, ultrashort optical pulses. David Frederick Strong became the fifth President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Victoria on 1 July, 1990.
Dr. Strong obtained his doctorate in Geology from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1970, and has had successful research and consulting career in many scientific and economic aspects of mineral and energy resources throughout the world. He has provided consultation and advice on these matters to numerous corporations and governments. He has published many scientific and technical papers, edited a number of books and scientific journals, presented lectures, and organised and led numerous international geological field trips. He has also supervised the research of many postgraduate and undergraduate students on mineral deposits and metallogeny, with a particular focus on eastern Canada and western Europe.
During his career, Dr. Strong has been awarded many honours, and awards, including several honorary doctorates. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the Geological Association of Canada, the Geological Society of America, and the Society of Economic Geologists. He is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada Standing Advisory Committee on University Research, the Research Council of the Canadian Institute of Advanced Research, the British Columbia Premier's Advisory Council on Science and Technology, and the National Research Council of Canada.
Aside from his responsibilities as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Victoria, he has a special interest in the promotion of co-operation between business, universities, and governments in and between Canada and other countries.

The research work of Dr. Strynadka has focused on determining high resolution structures of proteins that play critical roles in antibiotic resistance and in infectious diseases caused by bacterial pathogens, including the clinically notorious superbug MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and the pathogenic Escherichia coli that plague our health care system. At the core of her research is X-ray crystallography, which allows her group to analyze the three-dimensional structures of these proteins. Peter Stys is a world leader in white matter disorders. His seminal contributions to our understanding of fundamental mechanisms of axo-glial injury include the key role of calcium influx into axons and release from stores; the expression of glutamate receptors on both axons and myelin; and the potent regulation of these receptors by copper, prion protein and Aβ. His systematic approach has broad relevance to many diseases such as stroke, neurotrauma, MS and Alzheimer’s disease. His experience as a practicing neurologist together with his engineering skills uniquely position him to continue making important discoveries which will have tremendous translational relevance.
Peter Stys est expert mondial en matière de troubles de la substance blanche.
