The COVID-19 pandemic has forced significant and rapid change in the way that research is conducted and how research-funding organizations function. This has, in some cases, accelerated innovation that may have otherwise taken years. In other cases, the negative impacts on organizations and individuals have been significant, including decreases in research activities not related to COVID-19, loss of revenues, and decreases in staff and research productivity overall. The pandemic presents an opportunity to be transformative in our approach to reimagining the health research ecosystem and to identify opportunities for research funders to build back wiser.
In light of these changes, the RSC has formed the Royal Society of Canada Working Group on Health Research System Recovery, in partnership with the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), with support from the Knowledge Translation (KT) Program at Unity Health Toronto. The study team is conducting a research project to develop actionable recommendations to strengthen Canada’s health research system post-pandemic. As part of this project, the team is looking to hear from organizations on ways they have adapted to support COVID-19 pandemic recovery.
