Dear RSC Members,

On behalf of the RSC Board of Directors, the Governance and Ethics Committee is inviting nominations for the following positions on the Board: RSC President, RSC Secretary, and the President of each of the three RSC Academies. Information on each role follows, along with the nomination process and timelines. In making nominations, members are reminded that the RSC operates in both official languages with a full commitment to inclusive excellence and the importance of supporting equity and diversity in RSC governance.

RSC President

As the senior elected official of the RSC, the President chairs the Board of Directors as well as the RSC Council, and works closely with colleagues and the RSC staff throughout the year. Leadership experience is a critical asset for potential nominees.

The practice of rotation calls for the next RSC President to be a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

The elected candidate will begin a four-year term as a member of the RSC Board of Directors after the COEE in November 2021: one year as President-Elect, and three years as President.

RSC Secretary

The RSC Secretary is responsible for oversight of the processes leading to the recognition of excellence by the RSC. Knowledge of Academy, College and RSC processes are critical assets for potential nominees.

The RSC Secretary will begin a three-year term on the RSC Board of Directors after the Celebration of Excellence and Engagement in November 2021. The term is renewable once.

President of the Academy of Arts and Humanities
President of the Academy of Social Sciences
President of the Academy of Science

Academy Presidents serve as Vice-Presidents of the RSC, and contribute as members of the RSC Board of Directors. Each Academy President ensures the rigor of the nomination-selection processes within the Academy that lead to the recognition of excellence by the RSC.

Candidates elected to the position of Academy President will be President-Elect of their respective Academy from November 2021 to November 2022, and will then begin their three-year terms as Presidents and on the RSC Board of Directors as RSC Vice-President from November 2022 to November 2025.

Nomination Process

To propose to the Governance and Ethics Committee a candidate for one of these roles, please put their name forward along with a paragraph of justification no later than April 2 (send to admin@rsc-src.ca). Self-nominations are welcome. It is not necessary to seek the agreement of a proposed candidate at this time.

The Governance and Ethics Committee, with the support of RSC staff, will follow up as appropriate, and will make recommendations to the Board of Directors for the slate that will be presented to members for election this Spring.

For additional information on the role of Academy Presidents, please see the Academy Operations Manual, available here. For additional information on the mission and mandate of the RSC, the by-laws are here and the Strategic Plan and Annual Report are here.

Many thanks for your attention to this important matter, and we look forward to hearing from you.
