Richard James Beamish, Pacific Biological Station, Department of fisheries and Oceans, is an internationally recognized fisheries research scientist. He has demonstrated the profound influences of climate change on fish populations in the North Pacific and has forcefully argued the implications of these influences on the management of fish populations. Dr. Beamish greatly improved methods for ageing marine fish, determining that many Pacific groundfish were much older than previously thought, which has required more cautious management approaches. He has identified two new species of lamprey, and was the co-discoverer of acid rain in North America. He has published about 140 reviewed papers in addition to serving 13 years as Director of the Pacific Biological Station. In 1999 he was appointed a member of the Order of Canada for his scientific work.
