DAVID LYLE JEFFREY, Professor of English at the University of Ottawa, is a distinguished scholar and educator whose contributions to medieval studies, historical criticism, and biblical tradition in English literature have been internationally recognized. Her groundbreaking work with Frances Kirwan led to their celebrated proof of the Witten formulas for stable vector bundles, a landmark achievement in the theory of moduli spaces; their techniques are now standard tools in symplectic geometry and other areas of mathematics and physics. David Jenkins is a scientist of the highest international standing. He has performed pioneering research on several major aspects of carbohydrate metabolism. He was the first to identify the importance of viscous fiber in lowering serum cholesterol levels and the first to document the effects of viscous fibers on glycemia, insulin levels and the gut hormone response and to explore their mechanisms. Most importantly, he developed the concept of the glycemic index of foods based on their effects on blood glucose levels. The glycemic index, in conjunction with total carbohydrate intake, is now recognized to be an important determinant of risk of adult onset diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Jenkins' research findings have had a profound influence on public policy to develop preventive and therapeutic strategies for diabetes and coronary heart disease. Of his over 300 papers, two are citation classics, one having been cited over 500 and the other over 600 times, and an additional 19 papers have been cited between 100 and 350 times each.

Born in 1946 Jane Jenson is an active political scientist whose contributions have shown great originality. Obtaining her Ph.D. in 1974, she was one of a team whose repeated panel studies of class and region in political choice in Canada were widely published. More recently she has edited and written books and papers on gender and the state, contemporary Canadian politics, and French politics. Most noteworthy have been her book and articles, written with Professor George Ross, on French communism. These outstanding studies, based on first-hand experience, have been widely applauded for their originality, combining theoretical sophistication with keen insight into the lives and roles of the party members with whom she worked. A professor at Carleton University, she has also at various times been connected with Wellesley, Tufts, and Harvard, where she is an associate of the Center for European Studies, and, at present, MacKenzie King Professor of Canadian Studies.

Manfred Jericho, Department of Physics, Dalhousie University, has gained a high international reputation as an inventive and careful condensed-matter experimentalist who has made timely and incisive contributions to a variety of subjects. R. E. Jervis was among the pioneers in developing nuclear methods of analysis. He was especially instrumental in devising ways to apply nuclear reactions brought about in reactors and accelerators in studying trace substances down to the ppb level in chemical and biological systems. He was the first to study heavy metals including Hg, As, Pb, Cd, in the Canadian environment and diet using techniques of radioanalytical chemistry and has also pioneered, world-wide, the use of human tissues such as hair and nails to monitor bodily accumulation of toxic substances. Alice Ming Wai Jim is Full Professor of Contemporary Art History and Concordia University Research Chair in Ethnocultural Art Histories. Professor Johari's research has contributed significantly to our understanding of amorphous substances: His considerations of the thermodynamics of structural relaxation and its effects on the properties of glasses have led him to formulate a well-received theory of hierarchically constrained molecular motions which begin at particular sites and evolve with time; he has contributed much to the theories of fast-ion conduction in ionic glasses, and of dynamically controlled chemical reactions, and developed the concept of negative feedback between molecular diffusion and chemical reaction in the gelation and vitrification of thermoset polymers. He has developed calorimetric methods for distinguishing between amorphous and microcrystalling states, and techniques for hyperquenching of micron-size droplets for the study of partially metabolized states of biopolymers.
