Mike Tyers is distinguished for his work on regulation of the eukaryotic cell cycle by targeted protein degradation, for his analysis of MAP kinase signalling pathways, and for his application of proteomic techniques to the mapping of protein interactions. His research has fundamental implications for a broad range of biological processes.

LONG David Tyrrell has initiated and directed major research programs to encompass both creative basic research and clinical applications, and has authored co-authored over 100 publications. He was at the forefront of discovery of the antiviral activity for hepatitis B virus of purine dideoxynucleosides, and extension of this work to the discovery of a potent "blockbuster" new drug, lamivudine. This is the first oral antiviral agent for hepatitis B treatment and is currently licensed in over 120 countries. He is presently pursuing new approaches to circumvent clinical resistance to lamivudine. His seminal observations have altered significantly the management of hepatitis B, and his findings have also significantly enhanced the outcome of hepatitis B patients undergoing liver transplantation. He has received international recognition for this work, as demonstrated by invitations to present major addresses at state of the art meetings dealing with research and treatment of hepatitis B virus, as well as the awarding of major prizes including the Prix Galien Award (1998), the Alberta Order of Excellence (2000), and the appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada (2002). In addition, he has demonstrated exceptional ability in the administration of a department, a major medical school and government committees. Owen Underhill, Professor of Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University, is a respected Canadian composer/conductor, an inspirational music educator/mentor, and an influential cultural animator. He has composed over 70 works and conducted 175 premiere performances. He has been a leading force in shaping contemporary music culture on the West Coast as artistic director/programmer with Vancouver New Music and the Turning Point Ensemble. He has earned the title “Canadian music ambassador”.

Unruh is a theoretical physicist whose work has ranged over a broad area and concentrated on fundamental problems. His most important contributions are a rigorous demonstration that a Kerr Black Hole emits particles, and that an accelerated detector in vacuo at 0°K behaves as if bathed in radiation at a temperature proportional to the acceleration. He has received numerous honours including the Herzberg Medal of the CAP and The Rutherford Medal in Physics.

Marcelo Urquia holds a Canada Research Chair in Applied Population Health. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to the reproductive health and the social determinants of health of immigrant families and ethnic minorities. His innovative research uses large linked multi-sectoral databases at the population level. His current work with immigrant communities focuses on the health consequences of female discrimination and child marriage.

François Vaillancourt est un des pionniers mondiaux de léconomie des questions linguistiques et un des spécialistes canadiens dans le domaine des relations financières intergouvernemantales. ------------------

Chef d'orchestre, pianiste et professeure, Lorraine Vaillancourt est une figure majeure de la vie musicale québécoise et canadienne. Après avoir assumé la direction de l'Atelier de musique contemporaine, mis sur pied par Serge Garant, cours d'avant-garde où création, interprétation et pédagogie musicales sont étroitement liées, elle devint membre fondateur des Evénements du Neuf consacrés à la musique actuelle et devenus lieu de rencontre des grands courants européens et nord-américains. En 1989, elle fonde le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, formé de 15 musiciens, où elle assume le double rôle de directrice artistique et de chef d'orchestre. Le NEM a déjà à son actif plusieurs tournées dans les hauts lieux de la musique contemporaine. Vaillancourt a contribué à la création du Groupe de recherches interdisciplinaires sur la musique du XXe siècle, ainsi qu'à la fondation de la revue « Circuit ». Eminemment consciente de l'apport essentiel de l'interprète dans la constitution de la mémoire d'une collectivité et avec près de trois cents créations, elle contribue d'une façon exceptionnelle au dynamisme et à la qualité de la vie musicale canadienne.

Sari van Anders is the Canada 150 Research Chair in Social Neuroendocrinology, Sexuality, and Gender/Sex, and Professor of Psychology, Gender Studies, and Neuroscience. Her research provides novel models of gender/sex and sexual diversity, new understandings of sexual phenomena, and innovative approaches to feminist and queer neuroscience, asking hormonal questions that have evolution and social construction in their answers. She also works towards social justice and change within academia.

Sari van Anders est titulaire de la Chaire de recherche Canada 150 en neuroendocrinologie sociale, sexualité et genre / sexe, et professeur de psychologie, d'études de genre et de neurosciences. Ses recherches fournissent de nouveaux modèles de genre / sexe et de diversité sexuelle, de nouvelles compréhensions des phénomènes sexuels et des approches innovantes des neurosciences féministes et queer, posant des questions hormonales qui ont une évolution et une construction sociale dans leurs réponses. Elle travaille également pour la justice sociale et le changement au sein du milieu universitaire.

Theodorus van de Ven, PAPRICAN and Pulp and Paper Research Centre, McGill University, is a well known pioneer in bridging the fields of hydrodynamics and colloidal science. He brilliantly created ingenious scientific experimental devices to permit the study of particle-particle interactions. His experimental approach to resolving theoretical issues has been widely used throughout the scientific world. He has achieved milestones in both rigorous theoretical developments and elegant experiments on model and applied systems. His findings have applications in areas as diverse as paper-making, cell adhesion and blood component interactions, and oil dispersion in the processing of Athabaska oil sands. His book, Colloidal Hydrodynamics, is considered a classic on the subject. He is a recipient of the prestigious American Chemical Society Award in Colloid or Surface Chemistry.

Nancy E. van Deusen’s pioneering scholarship in women and gender history, the histories of African and Indigenous slavery, and early modern Catholicism have earned her a place as one of the most distinguished colonial Latin Americanists and Atlantic World historians in North America today. Her meticulous research and thought-provoking analyses have led to innovations in the classroom and in scholarship, providing a more nuanced portrayal of previously under-represented groups.

Nancy E. van Deusen, grâce à ses études pionnières sur les femmes et l’histoire du genre, les histoires de l’esclavage africain et autochtone, et les débuts du catholicisme moderne figure parmi les historiens les plus éminents du monde latino-américain colonial et du monde atlantique en Amérique du Nord à l’heure actuelle.
