The College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada is committed to fostering engagement amongst its members, the Royal Society of Canada, and the public. To facilitate this engagement and showcase the expertise of our College members, the RSC College Webinar Series will be hosted by the Royal Society of Canada three times each year. This webinar series will be managed by the College executive, advised by College Council, and supported by Walter House.

Climate Change

From fires to floods, tornados to ice storms, the past few years have seen an unprecedented number of extreme weather events. Climate change has been a growing concern for years, but never before have the impacts of extreme weather been felt by so many across the country. Our responses to these overlapping crises present overlapping questions of science, policy, resources, and will. In this webinar, speakers will be invited to discuss the ways climate change is touching Canada and the planet, and what can be—needs to be—done.

Speakers

Julie Mireille Theriault

Julie Mireille Thériault is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Extreme Winter Weather Events at the Université du Québec à Montréal. Her work aims to identify the weather factors, including precipitation, that lead to high-impact events. She combines modeling, measurements and theory to study those factors in unprecedented ways. Her achievements have led to key advances in precipitation measurement and in improving our understanding of rain-snow transitions, freezing rain formation and climate change in northern environments.

Xander Wang

Dr. Xander Wang is an Associate Professor in the School of Climate Change and Adaptation at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). He is also the Director of Climate Smart Lab in the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation. Dr. Wang’s research is mainly focused on regional climate modeling, climate downscaling, hydrological modeling and flooding risk analysis, energy systems modeling under climate change, climate change impact assessment and adaptation studies, GIS, spatial modeling and analysis, big data analysis and visualization. His multidisciplinary background has enabled him to develop a pioneering climate change research program in the Canadian Center for Climate Change and Adaptation at UPEI. Dr. Wang has demonstrated an exceptional level of research achievements through high-impact peer-reviewed journal publications, considerable external research funds, training of large numbers of HQPs, extensive professional services, active participation in community services, and so on.

Patrick Leroux (Moderator)

Dr. Leroux is a Full Professor of English and French at Concordia University. He was until recently the Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of Arts and Science. He is the current Secretary of the RSC College.
