For the 20th consecutive year, the G7 science academies, including the RSC, have signed statements that contribute the best available knowledge and insights to G7 leaders for the G7 Summit. This year’s summit will take place in Italy from June 13-15, 2024.
Each year, one member state takes on leadership of the G7 and hosts the summit in rotation. Italy assumed presidency on January 1, 2024, and will pass it to Canada in December 2024.
In preparation for the upcoming summit, the G7 national academies convened in Rome, from April 11-12, under the theme “Science for the Future: Challenges, Responsibilities and Opportunities.” They discussed and presented joint statements with recommendations for pressing global challenges, including agriculture, AI, human health, nuclear arms control, social inequalities, and cultural heritage.
The statements were officially presented to the Government of Italy on April 12, and have now been forwarded to the government leadership of each G7 country via the Sherpa process.
View the six statements:
1. Security and the safety of agricultural production
2. Artificial intelligence and society
3. Policy recommendations for health issues
4. Nuclear arms control
5. Social inequalities and poverty. Combating increased vulnerability.
6. Science and communication of cultural heritage. Knowledge and public awareness of our collective roots.
