Biography

As a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa, Gary Slater conducts research that bridges physics with biomedical science. He uses theoretical and computational models to tackle complex problems. A significant focus of his work involves understanding the physics of DNA sequencing. This includes studying established methods like electrophoresis (gel and capillary) and microfluidics, as well as cutting-edge nanopore technology. Additionally, Professor Slater’s team researches core diffusion principles. These studies are crucial for understanding everything from how drugs are released in the body to the movement of large molecules within living cells and the overall dynamics of cell populations. A Fellow of the American Physical Society, he has been Vice-Dean (two different Faculties), Dean and Associate Vice-President at the University of Ottawa. He is currently Researcher in Residence in the Office of the Chief Science Advisor of Canada.
