Madeleine Blanchet

Docteur en médecine, Madeleine Blanchet est vite passée du service à l'individu au service à la société. En effet, c'est en santé publique qu'elle poursuivit ses études supérieures, une santé publique qui dépassa vite les aspects thérapeutiques pour cerner les dimensions préventives et épidémiologiques.
Ses premières recherches en nutrition furent suivies de recherches et de réflexions sur la santé des populations, des femmes et des enfants en particulier. Elle développa des indicateurs de santé qu'elle se chargea de « vendre » non seulement à ses collègues mais aussi aux dirigeants politiques en leur soumettant de nombreux avis à titre de présidente du Conseil des affaires sociales et de la famille.
La Société royale du Canada doit se féliciter de pouvoir l'accueillir en ses rangs comme quelqu'un qui a bien su allier la science et la politique, toutes deux dans leur sens le plus noble.

Tom Bloom works in complex analysis in several variables. His work on the geometry of pseudo-convex boundaries in Cn was instrumental in the better understanding of the 2-Neumann problem. His work on approximation theory established Kergin's interpolation as the correct generalization of Lagrange's interpolation from one to several variables. His articles are regularly cited. He is internationally well known as can be seen by his numerous invitations to give talks in Canada, in the United States and in Europe. As chairman of the mathematics department of the University of Toronto he helped to improve the atmosphere for mathematical research.

Rhoda Blostein, Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry, McGill University, is a pioneer in fundamental studies of the sodium/potassium exchange pump (Na/K ATPase) that is crucial to cellular functions such as volume regulation, nutrient uptake and nerve impulse propagation. Her work has influenced knowledge of ion pump mechanisms. She demonstrated the existence of a labile phosphorylated intermediate during Na/K ATPase catalysis in red cell membranes. Using inverted red cell membrane vesicles she delineated the membrane sidedness of cation interactions with the ATPase. She obtained direct evidence of the alternate use of Na+ and protons by the Na/K- and gastric H/K-ATPases. She has provided the first definitive evidence that cardiac glycoside binding occurs in the C-terminal half of the Na/K-ATPase. Her work provides new insights into the structural basis for the coupling of conformational changes to ATP hydrolysis by Na/K-ATPase.

Later with a partner and limited private funds to prove up an entirely new mining industry for Canada that spilled over into renewed diamond exploration worldwide. This along with his philanthropy at a high level in basic research education and medicine has led to numerous awards including Order of Canada, Logan Medal, two D.Sc. honorary degrees and induction in the Canadian Mining Hall of Fame.

Professor Diethard Bohme is internationally recognized as a distinguished scholar and pioneer with an outstanding record of achievement in scientific research. He has made seminal contributions in physical organic chemistry, flame-ion chemistry, chemistry in the earth's ionosphere, astrochemistry, and the chemistry and metal-ion chemistry of large carbon clusters. His many scholarly articles, reviews and invited lectures at learned institutions have had a significant impact in three disciplines: chemistry, physics and astronomy. Professor Bohme's research achievements have been recognized often, both nationally and internationally: he has received the Society's Rutherford Memorial Medal in Chemistry (1981), an Alexander von Humboldt Prize (1990/91) and a Killam Research Fellowship (1991/93). In 1998 Professor Bohme was the recipient of the John C. Polanyi Award in Physical Chemistry from the Canadian Society for Chemistry.
