Prof. Rudolf Uher

Rudolf Uher is a psychiatrist and Canada Research Chair in Early Intervention at Dalhousie University. He is developing personalized treatment of depression and bipolar disorder and testing early interventions to prevent severe mental illness. Dr Uher is the principal investigator of Families Overcoming Risks and Building Opportunities for Well-being (FORBOW), author of 160 articles on mental illness and recipient of the 2014 Max Hamilton Memorial Prize.

Owen Underhill, Professor of Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University, is a respected Canadian composer/conductor, an inspirational music educator/mentor, and an influential cultural animator. He has composed over 70 works and conducted 175 premiere performances. He has been a leading force in shaping contemporary music culture on the West Coast as artistic director/programmer with Vancouver New Music and the Turning Point Ensemble. He has earned the title “Canadian music ambassador”.

Unruh is a theoretical physicist whose work has ranged over a broad area and concentrated on fundamental problems. His most important contributions are a rigorous demonstration that a Kerr Black Hole emits particles, and that an accelerated detector in vacuo at 0°K behaves as if bathed in radiation at a temperature proportional to the acceleration. He has received numerous honours including the Herzberg Medal of the CAP and The Rutherford Medal in Physics.

He is internationally recognized for his contributions to the reproductive health and the social determinants of health of immigrant families and ethnic minorities. His innovative research uses large linked multi-sectoral databases at the population level. His current work with immigrant communities focuses on the health consequences of female discrimination and child marriage.

Tracy Vaillancourt est titulaire d’une Chaire de recherche du Canada de niveau 1 en santé mentale et en prévention de la violence en milieu scolaire. Elle est également présidente élue de l’International Society of Research on Aggression, et une cheffe de file mondiale dans le domaine de la recherche sur la violence et la santé mentale. Lorraine Vaillancourt

Chef d'orchestre, pianiste et professeure, Lorraine Vaillancourt est une figure majeure de la vie musicale québécoise et canadienne. Après avoir assumé la direction de l'Atelier de musique contemporaine, mis sur pied par Serge Garant, cours d'avant-garde où création, interprétation et pédagogie musicales sont étroitement liées, elle devint membre fondateur des Evénements du Neuf consacrés à la musique actuelle et devenus lieu de rencontre des grands courants européens et nord-américains.
En 1989, elle fonde le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, formé de 15 musiciens, où elle assume le double rôle de directrice artistique et de chef d'orchestre. Le NEM a déjà à son actif plusieurs tournées dans les hauts lieux de la musique contemporaine. Vaillancourt a contribué à la création du Groupe de
recherches interdisciplinaires sur la musique du XXe siècle, ainsi qu'à la fondation de la revue « Circuit ». Eminemment consciente de l'apport essentiel de l'interprète dans la constitution de la mémoire d'une collectivité et avec près de trois cents créations, elle contribue d'une façon exceptionnelle au dynamisme et à la qualité de la vie musicale canadienne.

Theodorus van de Ven, PAPRICAN and Pulp and Paper Research Centre, McGill University, is a well known pioneer in bridging the fields of hydrodynamics and colloidal science. He brilliantly created ingenious scientific experimental devices to permit the study of particle-particle interactions. His experimental approach to resolving theoretical issues has been widely used throughout the scientific world. He has achieved milestones in both rigorous theoretical developments and elegant experiments on model and applied systems. His findings have applications in areas as diverse as paper-making, cell adhesion and blood component interactions, and oil dispersion in the processing of Athabaska oil sands. His book, Colloidal Hydrodynamics, is considered a classic on the subject. He is a recipient of the prestigious American Chemical Society Award in Colloid or Surface Chemistry.

Henry van Driel is a scientist of international renown who has made a mark in several major branches of laser science, nonlinear optics, and condensed matter physics. In particular, his use of harmonic generation as a probe of semiconductor surface and interface properties, and his investigations and explanations of laser-induced surface structures have opened new areas of materials research. His most significant contribution is his work on ultrafast dynamics of hot electrons and holes in optically-excited semiconductors, a topic of fundamental importance for electronic and optoelectronic devices. Recently he has used the coherence properties of laser radiation to control the direction of flow of electrical current in semiconductors, a dramatic and striking result, and potentially of great practical importance.

Jan Van Kranendonk, Ph.D., Professor of Physics at the University of Toronto, is distinguished for numerous applications of quantum and statistical mechanics to molecular and solid state physics. He pioneered in the field of spin-lattice relaxation effects of nuclear spins in ionic and magnetic crystals, and has studied spin wave interactions as well as the statistical properties of magnetic systems. In molecular physics, he developed the theory of induced absorption and of molecular excitons in crystals. His research work is characterized by penetrating physical insight; his expositions are lucid, and his arguments are always relevant. He was recently awarded the first E. W. R. Steacie Prize for original contributions to the Natural Sciences.

Ryan Van Lieshout’s internationally recognized research has made seminal contributions to our understanding of how pregnancy and early postpartum exposures affect offspring brain development and increase the risk of psychopathology across the lifespan. His work identifying modifiable risk factors for psychiatric problems and developing interventions aimed at disrupting the intergenerational transmission of mental disorders has had a significant positive impact on the mental health of mothers and their offspring.
