It is an honour to serve as President of the College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists of the Royal Society of Canada. The College brings together an extraordinary community of emerging leaders who embody scholarly, scientific, and artistic excellence. Together, we form a collective voice that has the power to shape the future of knowledge in Canada and beyond.
During my tenure, I will focus on four key priorities. First, we will work with partnering young academies on a program to better understand the erosion of trust in science in Canada and globally and support solutions to restore this trust. Second, I will continue to support the Francophone caucus, which explores the role of language in research and publication, and works to strengthen the place of Francophonie in Canadian research. Third, we will deepen our engagement with Indigenous communities, building on initiatives led by my predecessors to advance meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and reconciliation. Finally, I will work to expand the reach of the At-Risk and Displaced Academics and Artists (ARDAA) programme, which welcomes scholars and artists from around the world whose voices and contributions are threatened by conflict, persecution, or displacement.
These priorities reflect my belief that the College must not only recognize excellence, but also serve as a force for inclusion, solidarity, and transformation. As a scientist working in green chemistry, I have experienced firsthand the impact that role models and mentors can have. Representation matters — especially for young women and members of underrepresented communities who aspire to lead in fields where barriers still exist. I hope that my presidency will inspire others to claim their place, to build, and to lead with confidence.
Above all, my vision is rooted in gratitude and responsibility. The support and encouragement I have received throughout my career compels me to give back. By lifting others up, we strengthen not only our disciplines, but our society as a whole. If together we can foster a culture of generosity, courage, and innovation, the College will continue to flourish as a beacon of hope and leadership.
