David Brindley investigates the hormonal regulation of triglyceride and phospholipid synthesis in stress, diabetes and obesity. He focuses on mechanisms that control the activity of the enzyme, phosphatidate phosphatase. Other studies are designed to elucidate how bioactive lipids regulate wound healing, tumor development, metastasis, angiogenesis and chemo-resistance.

David N. Brindley has provided international leadership for understanding the regulation of lipid metabolism. He pioneered most of the work on mammalian phosphatidate phosphatases, which were identified as lipins in 2006. His studies elucidate how lipins control lipid synthesis and also act as transcriptional regulators in adipose tissue development and fatty acid oxidation. His work provides a foundation for understanding derangements of lipid metabolism in diabetes and obesity. Dr. Brindley’s other work concerns wound healing and cancer. His studies elucidate how cell division, migration, angiogenesis and chemo-resistance are regulated through the metabolism lipid signaling molecules such as lysophosphatidate and sphingosine 1-phosphate.
