Keith Poole, Professor of Microbiology at Queen’s University, has made fundamental contributions to understanding the interplay between basic bacterial physiology and infectious disease. Importantly, he discovered a family of antibiotic pumps that export multiple antimicrobials out of the bacterium, P. aeruginosa. These so-called multidrug pumps are common in disease-causing bacteria and their discovery has revolutionized the field of antimicrobial chemotherapy and resistance and influenced antibiotic development in the pharmaceutical industry.
Keith Poole, professeur de microbiologie à l'Université Queen's, a contribué fondamentalement à la compréhension des interactions entre la physiologie bactérienne et les maladies infectieuses. La découverte des pompes à antibiotiques exportant de multiples substances antimicrobiennes hors de la bactérie P. aeruginosa fut des plus significatives.
