Biography

Alexie Tcheuyap is Professor of French and Postcolonial Studies at the University of Waterloo where is also serves as Dean of the Faculty of Arts since 2024. Prior to that, he was Chair, Vice-Dean and Associate Vice-President and Vice-Provost at the University of Toronto.

Alexie Tcheuyap was trained at the Ecole Normale Supérieure and the University of Yaoundé where he completed a BA in Bilingual Studies, a Maîtrise and a Doctorat de Troisième Cycle before coming to Queen’s University where he earned his PhD in French Literature. His research focuses on literary, film and media studies in which he published extensively. Among his book publications are Postnationalist African Cinemas (Manchester UP, 2011), Autoritarisme, presse et violence au Cameroun (Karthala, 2014), Avoir peur. Insécurité et roman en Afrique (Presses de l’Université Laval, 2018; with Hervé Tchumkam) and African Documentary Cinema (Routledge, 2024). Alexie Tcheuyap is a Senior Fellow of the European Institutes for Advanced Study and a Member of Royal Society of Canada.
