RSC Statement on the Attack by Russia on the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine

On Monday, September 28, a Russian drone struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in central Kyiv as part of a wave of attacks. Knowledge is the root of wellbeing and is a public good. When the cultural and intellectual heart of a society is struck, its ability to produce and disseminate knowledge for the benefit of present and future generations is undermined. More generally, such an attack is also an attack on the scientific and cultural heritage of all nations of the world.

The Royal Society of Canada firmly condemns this attack on the people of Ukraine and its scientific and cultural institutions.

The Royal Society of Canada has a history of partnership with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine that has supported Ukrainian scientists over the years through the Canada-Ukraine Exchange program. This partnership has been disrupted by the Russian invasion. We stand in solidarity with our academic colleagues in Ukraine and will continue to support them with mentorship and membership through our program for At-Risk and Displaced Academics and Artists.
