Mr. Alain Haurie

La carrière de M. Alain Haurie est remarquable. Il est devenu professeur à I'Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales de Montréal en 1963. A cette époque, l'enseignement de l'administration accordait une large place à la description du cadre juridique et des institutions, ainsi qu'au transfers des techniques et croyances des administrateurs en exercice. Mathématicien, M. Haurie s'est efforcé d'y introduire une nouvelle dimension. Par son enseignement et ses recherches - qui sont la source de plus d'une centaine de publications - il a persuadé ses collègues et étudiants que les méthodes quantitatives permettent de mieux préparer les décisions et doivent, par conséquent, trouver place dans la formation des administrateurs. Il a « modélisé » des problèmes de grande importance, soient ceux de la gestion des systèmes énergétiques et des établissements de santé. On lui doit la fondation du Groupe d'Etudes et de Recherches en Analyse des Décisions, qui recrute ses collaborateurs dans la plupart des universités et grandes écoles du Québec.
Le travail inlassable de Monsieur Haurie le place parmi ceux qui ont fait progresser les sciences de la gestion et contribué à l'étude de problèmes importants.

As an internationally-respected leader in the crystallography and crystal chemistry of minerals, Dr. Hawthorne has utilized the most advanced physical and chemical analytical methods to characterize the detailed structure of an extreme variety of natural inorganic compounds. By the application of sophisticated mathematical techniques, he has been able to unify the crystal-chemical relationships between nearly all types of non-metallic minerals, and to provide a structurally sound basis for classifying all such minerals. This unified chemical-structural approach has enabled him to lay a fundamental groundwork for interpreting the paragenesis of the minerals in some of the earth's most important rock masses and ore deposits.

Dr. John Hayes is the acknowledged authority on Late Roman pottery and his expert knowledge is eagerly sought by archaeologists working anywhere within the Empire's sphere of influence - from Britain to India, from Central Europe to Ethiopia. As he has gradually refined the picture of ceramic production at various centres throughout the Empire and documented the export of their wares far and wide, the value of such wares has gradually approached the accuracy of coins as a tool for dating in archaeological excavations, and has formed an important source for the writing of ancient economic history.

MICHAEL R. HAYDEN is Professor of Medical Genetics and Internal Medicine, University of British Columbia. Two of his research studies are models of approaches to major human disease: In his studies of Huntington disease, a classic dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disorder, he was the first to identify brain lesions by positron emission tomography, to find a reliable genetic marker for predictive testing, and to use size of the trinucleotide expansion (the mutation) for accurate diagnosis. He was also the first to identify lipoprotein lipase (LPL) mutations as causes of LPL deficiency, to analyze their distribution in human populations, and to demonstrate their role in atherogenesis.

Brian Haynes is the world leader in medical information research and knowledge translation as a means to improve clinical and health care through improving the retrieval, distillation, synthesis, dissemination and application of validated health care knowledge. He was the first person ever to systematically research a worldwide array of clinical medical journal articles on diagnosis, prognosis, therapeutics, economics, and quality-of-care, establishing that less than 1% of them were both scientifically valid and clinically applicable. He then led the worldwide scientific effort to correct this deficiency by creating a health knowledge refinery and leading the scientific development of both evidence-based journals and internet information services.

lan Brent Heath, one of Canada's most innovative cell biologists, has elucidated the role of the cytoskeleton in the intracellular mechanics of fungal and plant cells. This work is of central importance because almost all aspects of the biology of these organisms is controlled by the cytoskeleton. He pioneered the use of electron microscopy for functional and phylogenetic studies of fungal and protist cell division. Heath is now introducing innovative concepts to the process of tip-growth, the hallmark of the fungi. He has been awarded the Huxley Memorial Medal for Research Excellence by the Imperial College.

Dr. Heath's cytological studies on rust fungi have not only contributed significantly to the understanding of how these obligate plant pathogens interact at a cellular level with their hosts and nonhosts, but also have allowed her to develop more widely applicable models of the basis and evolution of host parasite specificity. In addition, she was the first to develop a technique to induce rust haustoria away from the living plant, and to discover, in a rust fungus, a cultivar-specific elicitor of defense responses that may be of major importance in determining host specificity.

Paul Hebert is one of the leading population biologists in Canada. He is best known for his work on breeding system evolution which has explored the genetic characteristics of cyclic parthenogens and their obligately asexual derivatives. This work has led to the identification of a new mechanism promoting the transition from sexual to asexual reproduction. In a broader sense his work is an important component of the new wave of empirical studies which are challenging long-held views concerning the evolution of sex.

Jane Heffernan is a recognized international leader in Infectious Disease Modelling. Her Modelling Infection and Immunity Lab tackles important questions in Mathematical Epidemiology and In-host Pathogen Dynamics, using mathematical and computational modelling to ascertain key characteristics of pathogens, individual hosts, and populations that allow for disease spread, and to determine public health and medical intervention strategies that will be needed to contain or eradicate an infectious disease.

Siegfried Hekimi’s work has advanced our understanding of the mechanisms that dictate animal longevity. He has contributed significantly in pioneering and validating the genetic approach to the study of aging using nematodes and mice. Specifically, his work has demonstrated that: 1) There are evolutionarily conserved genes whose function limits lifespan, 2) Such aging genes can be grouped into independent genetic pathways, 3) There is a positive causal relationship between mitochondrial electron transport and aging. 4) Molecular damage from mitochondrial reactive oxygen species is not the link between mitochondrial function and aging.
