Dr. Michael Hayden
RSC Fellow, Academy of Sciences
Affiliation: The University of British Columbia
MICHAEL R. HAYDEN is Professor of Medical Genetics and Internal Medicine, University of British Columbia. Two of his research studies are models of approaches to major human disease: In his studies of Huntington disease, a classic dominantly inherited neurodegenerative disorder, he was the first to identify brain lesions by positron emission tomography, to find a reliable genetic marker for predictive testing, and to use size of the trinucleotide expansion (the mutation) for accurate diagnosis. He was also the first to identify lipoprotein lipase (LPL) mutations as causes of LPL deficiency, to analyze their distribution in human populations, and to demonstrate their role in atherogenesis.
Dr. Brian Hayden
RSC Fellow, Academy of Social Sciences
Affiliation: Simon Fraser University
Keywords: prehistory, Ethnoarchaeology, feasting, inequality, domestication
Long Citation
Brian Hayden has developed and tested hypotheses to explain how complex human social organization emerged in egalitarian societies. He argues that ambitious individuals create multiple strategies to acquire prestige and social power, notably through manipulation of surpluses and possession of arcane knowledge, and that these ambitions transform societies. His fieldwork throughout the world provides an empirical basis for hypotheses that explore the origins of agriculture, the function of religion, and the emergence of social inequality. Controversial and influential, his work has been widely published.

Long Citation
Dr. R. Brian Haynes is the world leader in medical information research and knowledge translation as a means to improve clinical and health care through improving the retrieval, distillation, synthesis, dissemination and application of validated health care knowledge. Hekimi, Siegfried - Molecular Biology and Genetics - McGill University
Siegfried Hekimi’s work has advanced our understanding of the mechanisms that dictate animal longevity. He has contributed significantly in pioneering and validating the genetic approach to the study of aging using nematodes and mice. Specifically, his work has demonstrated that: 1) There are evolutionarily conserved genes whose function limits lifespan, 2) Such aging genes can be grouped into independent genetic pathways, 3) There is a positive causal relationship between mitochondrial electron transport and aging. 4) Molecular damage from mitochondrial reactive oxygen species is not the link between mitochondrial function and aging.

Prof. John Helliwell
RSC Fellow, Academy of Social Sciences
Affiliation: The University of British Columbia
Keywords: Well-being, social capital
John Helliwell is one of Canada's younger economists, whose work is widely recognized internationally both in governments and in academic research. His earlier studies of the effect of governmental monetary and fiscal policies on private and public spending or new capital goods developed into a series of important research endeavors for two royal commissions, the Bank of Canada and various environmental and consumer councils.
