David Rowe has made outstanding contributions of a fundamental nature to theoretical nuclear physics, in particular to algebraic and geometric approaches to nuclear modeling. He pioneered the equations-of-motion method, now widely used in the analysis of experimental data in both nuclear and molecular physics. He also succeeded in embedding collective models into the microscopic shell model by the application of Lie algebra, group theory and differential geometry to the many-body problem, leading to a fully microscopic description of nuclear rotational bands. His international reputation is amply demonstrated by his many invitations to give lectures at international summer schools and conferences.
He was awarded the Rutherford Medal in Physics of the Society in 1983.

Jennifer Rowsell is a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair at Brock University’s Faculty of Education and a leader in literacy studies, multimodality, and multiliteracies. Her research program focuses on ways of moving such literacy skills as reading, writing, and communicating into the 21st century. Professor John Rubinstein has pioneered methods in electron cryomicroscopy (cryo-EM), allowing the technique to reveal biomolecular structures at unprecedented resolution. He has also used cryo-EM to reveal how cells energize membranes and produce the energy currency ATP. His work has applications ranging from design of new antibiotics for tuberculosis to understanding how neurons communicate with each other in the brain.

Christopher Rudd is an internationally renowned immunologist who uncovered how T-cells of the immune system are activated to respond in infections and cancer immunology. He discovered that T-cells become activated via a phosphorylation cascade involving specific kinases and adaptor complexes. He held professorial positions at Harvard and Cambridge Universities before returning to Canada, has won many international awards where his work laid the foundation for present immune therapies against cancer including chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) therapy.

Dr. Michael Rudnicki is an outstanding young scientist whose studies of muscle development have placed him at the forefront of international science. He has discovered the key molecules that regulate muscle development in the embryo and that control muscle regeneration from stem cells following injury. For close to 15 years, Dr. Rudnicki's research has consistently broken new ground and challenged existing paradigms resulting in entirely new concepts of muscle development. His research clearly delineates the importance of stem cells in the regenerative process and paves the way for new therapeutic approaches to a cure for muscular dystrophy and the 40 other neuromuscular disorders. As an internationally renowned scientist, a mentor to a large group of young researchers, a highly effective leader in his own institution and as a scientific opinion leader, Dr. Rudnicki's election to the Royal Society of Canada will bring credit to the Society.

Benjamin Rusak, Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology, Dalhousie University, has contributed significantly to understanding the neural mechanisms regulating biological rhythms in mammals. He helped define the physiological mechanisms and functions of the major neural pacemaker responsible for the generation of daily (circadian) rhythms. His work has been important for understanding how environmental light cues entrain biological rhythms and regulate seasonal reproductive cycles in mammals. He was the founding Editor of the Journal of Biological Rhythms (1986), which is the leading journal in this field. His current research examines the neurochemical basis of biological rhythms and the applications of research on biological rhythms and sleep to psychiatry.

Michael Ruse of the University of Guelph is one of the most distinguished historians and philosophers of science practicing in Canada. The author of nineteen books, the latest of which is "Mystery of Mysteries: Is Evolution a Social Construction?" and hundreds of articles and reviews. Ruse is best known for his works on the Darwinian revolution, sociobiology and evolution. He is the founder and editor of the refereed journal "Biology & Philosophy", and General Editor of "Cambridge Studies in Philosophy and Biology", and Subject Editor of "The Blackwell Encyclopedia of Evolution", on the editorial boards of "Zygon", "Philosophy of Science", "Science Education", "The Quarterly Review of Biology" and many other journals.
His renown is such that he was made the leading defense witness in a 1981 Arkansas case on the right of teachers to teach evolution. His writings have been commended for their verve, imagination, and welcome touches of humour.

The scientific researches of R. D. Russell have covered a broad field centered about geophysics, and include publications in such diverse subjects as electrical engineering, micro-chemistry and glaciology. However his most important contributions have been concerned with the measurement and interpretation of variations of the isotopic abundances of lead in minerals, and in this field he has acquired a worldwide reputation. Interpretations suggested by him have related lead isotope measurements to the origin of ore deposits, to continental structure, and to geochemical relationships between the earth's crust and upper mantle.
