The Canadian subsurface is rich in critical and strategic minerals essential to the energy and technological transition, such as lithium and copper. Faced with the growth of this industry, integrating sustainable development has become vital to minimize environmental and human impacts. This requires a holistic approach that unites the expertise of industry stakeholders, local communities, and First Peoples to reduce the ecological footprint and increase social acceptability for these projects.

To address this challenge, the Quebec Ecotoxicology Research Centre (EcotoQ), a strategic cluster funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) (DOI: https://doi.org/10.69777/309016), held a multidisciplinary workshop entitled “Sustainable Mining Development for a Healthy Planet.” This event brought together 42 experts and representatives from the scientific, industrial, civic, and Indigenous communities. This co-creation process fostered the emergence of innovative ideas and laid the groundwork for sustainable collaborations aimed at more responsible mining practices.
