David Layzell, Department of Biology, Queen's University, is recognized internationally for his work on the factors which regulate N2 fixation in legumes. He has shown that the nodule's ability to regulate its O2 supply is the key factor of mechanisms which control N2 fixation under many adverse environmental conditions. He has also developed sophisticated models of nodule function which show how O2 supply is controlled, and how O2 itself regulates nodule metabolism on a biochemical level. His work has required the development of novel scientific instruments which will greatly advance research in plant physiology and other areas of the life sciences.
