William Foulkes is an international leader in cancer genetics. He demonstrated the relationship between the breast cancer gene BRCA1 and a principal breast cancer subtype and identified risk-associated genes for goitre, and for tumours of the breast, ovary and brain, among others. He established the role of DICER1 in many childhood cancers and recognized the link between a pediatric brain tumour and a rare ovarian cancer, which has therapeutic implications.
William Foulkes est un chef de file international en génétique du cancer. Il a démontré la relation entre le gène de prédisposition au cancer du sein BRCA1 et un sous-type principal de cancer du sein. Il a aussi identifié des gènes associés, en autres, au risque de goitre et de tumeurs du sein, des ovaires et du cerveau. Il a établi le rôle de DICER1 dans de nombreux cancers infantiles et reconnu le lien entre une tumeur cérébrale pédiatrique et un cancer de l’ovaire rare, découverte ayant des implications thérapeutiques.
