A former professor of Early North American History at the University of Genoa (Italy), Luca Codignola is recognized internationally for his work relating to the religious history of Canada in a comparative European framework during the colonial period, from the 17th through the early 19th century. His scholarship has contributed to this research field in a most original way, particularly so with regard to the use of the Roman archives and those of the Holy See, until then sparsely used by historians.

Professeur titulaire d’histoire de l’Amérique du Nord à l’Université de Gênes (Italie), Luca Codignola est un spécialiste reconnu internationalement pour ses travaux en histoire religieuse comparée entre le Canada et certains pays européens au cours de la période coloniale des 16e - 18e siècles. Par ses travaux d’une vaste érudition, il a apporté une interprétation originale à ce champ de recherche en exploitant notamment les archives romaines et celles du Saint-Siège, jusque-là peu mises en valeur par les historiens.
