J. Stewart Aitchison is a world leader in the field of nonlinear optics, and considered the leading researcher in the area of spatial optical solitons. He reported the first observation of spatial optical solutions in a planar glass waveguide, a discovery which stimulated worldwide research into this area, as well as reporting the first experimental observations of discrete spatial optical solitons in an array of coupled waveguides. Professor Aitchison was also responsible for pioneering the study and use of ultrafast nonlinearities in semiconductors using A1.Ga.As as the nonlinear optical material.
