Long Citation (for publication and press release)
Eckhard Meinrenken has made several fundamental contributions to differential geometry and mathematical physics. His proof of the Guillemin-Steinberg 'quantization commutes with reduction' conjecture was a landmark achievement in symplectic geometry, with many important applications. Other major results include his proof of the Witten formulas in two-dimensional gauge theory, his work on the Verlinde formula, and his proof (with Anton Alekseev) of the longstanding Kashiwara-Vergne conjecture in the theory of Lie algebras. Meinrenken's work is closely connected with many of the recent developments in theoretical physics, such as conformal field theory and the theory of D-branes in string theory.
