John Reid’s career reflects his deep interest in history of the Maritimes, in particular concerning the way in which the experiences of Atlantic Canada have had an impact on the development of the rest of the country. His work has combined meticulous archival research with a broad knowledge of new historical thought. As a result he has made an original contribution to the study of the history of the northeastern region of both Canada and the United States. This has led to his participation in joint international research projects, linking scholars in Europe and North America, particularly in matters relating to aboriginal concerns.
