Sam Dales is an outstanding scientist in whose laboratory many excellent researchers have trained. His early research on Poxviruses established his reputation and culminated in a 1981 monograph "Biology of Poxviruses". His recent focus has been on virus-related demyelinating disease, an important area in which his impact can be seen in the number (6) of invited reviews he has contributed in 1987-88. A major discovery was the demonstration that infection leading to demyelination is host age dependent and related to the differentiation process of the target oligodendrocyte cell. DAMASCELLI, Andrea - Department of Physics and Astronomy, The University of British Columbia Damascelli’s research on the electronic structure of solids and the development of innovative spectroscopy techniques to study and manipulate quantum materials have led to pivotal contributions to the field of condensed matter physics. From uncovering the role of spin-orbit coupling in the superconductivity of Sr2RuO4 and Fe-based systems, to revealing charge order driven by Fermi-arc instabilities in cuprates, Damascelli’s pioneering work has bolstered and refocused the international community.

Barbara Dancygier is Professor and Distinguished University Scholar at the Department of English Language and Literatures, University of British Columbia, and past President of the International Cognitive Linguistics Association. Her research interests lie in cognitive linguistics and poetics, focusing on multimodal communication, linguistic constructions, and post-truth phenomena in public communication. The most outstanding figure in general and applied semiotic studies in contemporary Canada, Marcel Danesi, Program in Semiotics, Victoria University, is recognized around the world for the originality of his theories, his humanistic approach to pedagogical sciences, and for his deep understanding of Vico on whom he is an undisputed authority. Edwin Embrey Daniel, Professor, Department of Medicine, McMaster University, has used a multidisciplinary approach to understand the control of smooth muscle function at the whole animal, tissue, cellular and molecular level. He has evaluated functional control in terms of structure and he has related changes in smooth muscle control systems to diseases involving smooth muscle.
