John Bell is Canada's leading logician and philosopher of mathematics. His writings, renowned for their clarity and elegance, span a wide spectrum, including such topics as set theory, modal logic, continuum theory, space-time theory, and the philosophy of mathematics. His work is never merely technical: it always connects with deep questions of philosophy. Dr. John Cameron Bell
RSC Fellow, Academy of Sciences
Affiliation: University of Ottawa
Induction Year: 2013
John Bell is an international leader in the development of “oncolytic viruses” for cancer therapy. Dr. Bell discovered that many viruses have a natural preference for infecting and killing cancer cells. Their studies have demonstrated that these viruses not only kill the cancer cells, but also stimulate the host to mount an aggressive anti-tumor response that takes over from the viruses to continue the fight against the cancer. There work has led directly to highly successful clinical trials that have established the efficacy of this new therapeutic paradigm.

Dr. Graham Bell
RSC Fellow, Academy of Sciences
Affiliation: McGill University
Keywords: Evolution, natural selection, ecology, genetics, microbiology
GRAHAM BELL has worked on several basic issues in ecology and evolution. He helped to develop the modern evolutionary theory of aging, and performed experimental tests of its premises and predictions. His book on the evolution of sex was among the first to argue that the function of sex is to produce recombinant progeny which are resistant to prevailing diseases, and has been followed up by theoretical and comparative investigations of this idea. To pursue these and other issues in the laboratory, he has established "Chlamydomonas" as a model system in which evolutionary mechanisms can be studied in detail under controlled conditions. At the same time, field experiments have linked the laboratory system with the response of native plants to environmental variability in undisturbed primeval forest.
